Healthy Village

Half the population is heading for obesity, costing the nation a potential £45bn a year by 2050, according to a Government-sponsored report to be published 17 October 2007. Health Secretary Alan Johnson notes that individuals must take responsibility for their own health: "We will only succeed if the problem is recognised, owned and addressed at every level and every part of society."

This new section of our website is aimed at improving the health, fitness and well-being of residents. Thames Ditton and Weston Green are blessed with access to good health clubs, rowing clubs and all kinds of sports facilities. We have excellent green spaces, paths and of course the Thames towpath within easy jogging distance. You all know that you should take a constructive view of fitness training. If you are into competitive sports, you probably need little guidance. But if it is a long time since you did much exercise, or you have been a sporadic starter-and-stopper with no clear and consistent approach, or find it difficult to stick to it, then maybe our contributors can give you some ideas or help.

The hardest part is often starting out. In our opening article, John Cann offers some thoughts on points you might do well to address. John is a young and well-qualified fitness instructor who practises both privately (website here) and at Colets Health Club in Thames Ditton where he is a popular and effective (and extremely fit!) member of the fitness team. John has experience in elite sport including playing rugby for England U18’s and later for London Wasps Rugby Academy, competing in athletics, and training for mixed martial arts. He says: "True health is a union of body and mind that enables you to relieve stress and anxiety, and maintain health and fitness at all levels; a holistic state of positivity through which you can explore and enjoy your own, unique state of wellbeing."

More will follow! We must add the disclaimer that it is solely for you and your doctor to decide on the level of fitness program you should undertake.
