Who we are
The Resident’s Association acts for all those who live or work in the borough ward of Thames Ditton and the former ward of Weston Green. Through regular meetings, social activities, our magazine and website we keep in touch with residents’ views and we raise and spend funds for the benefit of the community. At local elections we put forward candidates for councillor seats – to help preserve the best interests of our community.
The area we cover
If you’re unsure whether your address lies within our area, please check the drop-down postcode lists below. You can see the area covered by the Association on the map below.
Note: Postal addresses and wards don’t always coincide – many Thames Ditton addresses lie outside Thames Ditton ward, while the ward now also includes some East Molesey addresses. If you have a Thames Ditton address (KT7) but your postcode isn’t shown in either list above, then you’re located in either Long Ditton ward (http://www.longditton.org) or the Hinchley Wood part of Hinchley Wood & Weston Green ward (see below). The Weston Green area covered by our Association contains Esher and Thames Ditton addresses, and also a few East Molesey addresses.

A brief history
Thames Ditton & Weston Green Residents’ Association was founded in 1934 to gain representation and a voice on local council – the Esher Urban District Council. This was motivated by the threat of a proposed Esher by-pass which would have cut through the Dittons Commons – and it was successfully opposed. Over the past 90 years we’ve had Residents’ Association councillors on Esher UDC, later Elmbridge Borough Council and, since 2005, also on Surrey County Council – always serving our community’s interests. Although since 2000 we are required to register with the Electoral Commission to stand in elections, we have remained independent and non-party political.
Electoral areas have changed over the years, and now often span different RA’s operating areas. In 2016 Thames Ditton ward expanded to include part of East Molesey. This area is now covered by our Association, as well as by the Molesey Residents Association. At the same time Weston Green ward was joined with Hinchley Wood ward, and here we work closely with the Hinchley Wood Residents Association, sharing councillors.
A voice for our community
With six Residents’ councillors we have a strong voice on Elmbridge Borough Council, working with other RA councillors to ensure that decisions are based on the needs of local communities and on good management rather than on party politics. Our RA county councillor, Nick Darby, represents our views on Surrey County Council.
Thames Ditton and Weston Green are attractive places to live, and with high property values there are constant commercial pressures for redevelopment. Having councillors representing us enables us to see what is coming up, carefully examine it, and work to make sure it is appropriate, well designed and respects the character of the area.
We are not opposed to change. Good development is essential for a thriving community. But we believe new developments should enhance the area rather than detract from what makes it special. In this we aim to:
- Conserve our precious remaining green spaces that contribute so much to a village atmosphere and recreational enjoyment.
- Protect the environment.
- Retain the diversity of local shops and businesses, excellent local health care facilities and provision for the elderly and for children.
The Association’s activities extend beyond council-related work. We invest in enhancement projects which make Thames Ditton and Weston Green even better places to live (see our RA in Action web page). And we aim to promote a sense of community.
We are an enthusiastic group of local residents, all volunteers, backed up by an army of supporters delivering our magazine, litter picking, flower planting, collecting subscriptions and helping with social functions etc. We are always delighted to welcome new members and fresh ideas.
Keeping in touch with you
We take consultation very seriously and make every effort to communicate with residents and establish their views. Through regular open meetings we keep in touch with residents. We produce a quarterly magazine, Thames Ditton Today, which is delivered to all residents and contains news and informative articles, including details of the Association’s activities. This website also carries news items and notices, and provides contact details of RA Officers and Councillors. If there’s an issue that matters to you, we’d love to hear from you.
Local government changes
From April 2027, local government in Surrey will move to a new unitary council structure, replacing the current borough and county councils with a single authority. We lie within the area of East Surrey Unitary Council. It will have new electoral wards, of similar size to the current county divisions, and with two councillors per ward. For TD & WG Residents’ Association our area, which has been within The Dittons county division, will now be spread between two unitary wards – Thames Ditton & East Molesey ward and Long Ditton, Hinchley Wood & Weston Green ward.
Sadly, in the May 2026 elections for East Surrey Council our RA candidates narrowly missed being elected in both our wards. However, the TD & WG Residents’ Association will remain engaged with the East Surrey Council and its councillors to ensure our community’s interests are maintained. And we will continue to field candidates in future council elections.
