Title: Thames Ditton Pub Crawl
Post by: Juninho on August 09, 2010, 12:04:56 PM
Right! I'm finally going to try and sort out a Thames Ditton pub crawl and just hope some people are keen enough to partake.

This is open to all - so please invite any friends/family etc. I'm going to try drag some non-forum members along too.

I've picked a date well into the future to allow people to put it in their diaries (err also happens to be the first free weekend I have... ).

So how about Saturday Sept. 11th? We could start at about 5pm?

What pubs would people like to see included / excluded?

I've come up with a short list (below) and if you could vote for up to 5 pubs each - I'll tally them up. If I've missed any - just put it in your vote. I reckon we should aim to do about 7 pubs in total allowing about 45 minutes to an hour per pub.

Albany
Swan (should have reopened by then)
Crown
Red Lion
George and Dragon
Ferry
Raintree
Greyhound
The New Inn
The Angel

Albany, Swan,  Lion,  Ferry, Angel, George would make a reasonable circuit.  Hard cases could do it twice....

There should maybe be provision to identify the crawlers (e.g. 'carrying a copy of Thames Ditton Today'  ;) ) and a timetable so that some can pick up the crawl at various points?

Does anyone have some local history snippets on the Albany and the Ferry?

Ok - that was close to my suggested route as well (but heavily influenced by the fact that those pubs are close to where I live!).

Carrying a copy of Thames Ditton Today sounds great. Or we could wear a distinctive colour? Or... I could even print t-shirts...

I'll have a think but I am leaning on the combo of carrying the mag and wearing a distinctive colour!

... or a plastic mac. (Can you still get those?)

Plastic mac might work well ... especially with the great 'summer' we are having!

Right ... we need to get some names down to get other people interested.

Please add your name to the attendee list below and post back if you're keen (route still tbd - but likely what keith said!)

John and I will come along but cannot make it until 6.15pm (french class until 6). You will have to let us know the circuit and timing so we can join you

nice one. yes I will post up a schedule (and stick to it... ) so that anyone who wants to can join in later.

this is quite a clever tactic as you could show up to a pub en route and make the decision on whether or not to join in!

I think I've also convinced two friends who live in East Molesey to come along too (they're actually just on the boundary of Thames Ditton/East Molesey so figured it would be fair).

Right - slight update as two more non forum members are in (also from east molesy).

I might have a slight problem now in that my partners brother + sister in law want to visit that weekend (kids in tow) but trying to work around that... please watch this space but for now assume its going ahead though we may have to make the first pub a kid friendly one (easy enough if we start at the Albany I guess!).

Please also feel free to invite neighbours/friends etc and keep the list updated... I'm hoping as we get more people on board that others might be tempted too!

There are a couple of pubs missing from the list. Marneys and The Ewe  :)

Fair point -  I confess I've been a little biassed in that I've been picking the ones closest to me...

And its a bit of a walk from the George to either of those and my original plan was to finish up at the George so that whomever fancies it can go to the Rose for some food... (though thats never been stated ... well not until now of course).

BUT I'll make you a deal - we can add one (or even both!) of those to the list if you agree to come along! (sod food I say)

Err - it might just be us two who make the last two pubs then but lets see!!

I think that doing all the pubs in TD & WG is rather too much (but then I am no longer a student...); if this one is a success then we can do a second one cetnred on Weston Green, with the Lamb & Star (Ewe), the Alma (Marneys), Greyhound, Marquis of Granby .... and just possibly the owner of The Cricketers (Tryst) will allow us to start there,  and we can toast The Harrow in sorrow.

Ok we'll go with what Keith said - his original suggestion was:
Albany, Swan,  Lion,  Ferry, Angel, George

Though can I propose we swap in the Crown for the Lion? or just add it in?

I like the Crown... !

mark.hawkins: that all said: if its required to swing the deal to get you to join in - well then I am happy to meet you at either Marneys or the Ewe for a pre pub crawl taster !!

Show off!! Only kidding like.

Well we went along for a sneaky pre dinner pint on Friday and then again on b/h Monday!

Its very nice and glad to see they have not tinkered too much with the menu nor raised the price. Not sure if they still do their 2 meals for whatever price they used to but the menu looked very similar and I think it was a tenner for a very decent lamb shank so can't complain.

Our worry when it was closed for 'refurb' was that it would open up as a trendy gastro pub type thing but I'm glad that it still looks like a pub.

We noticed the Crown was shut on b/h monday, at least during the day. Hope thats just a one off but then again I wonder how many pubs a small village such as ours can sustain.

Lets see...

I see in the About Thames Ditton mag that the Crown will now be called 'The Gallery' and will operate as a restaurant/ cafe/ bar. So can it still be included on a pub crawl?

Having said that, the advert looks shocking and the website does not work, in fact the web address advertised has not even been registered yet!! Why pay for an advert?

I know the people running it are very nice, but for goodness sake! Perhaps it is becoming a restaurant because organising a p*ss up in a pub would seem beyond them (/grumble)

I don't know why pub owners feel that changing the name of a historic old pub adds more than it takes away.  Faddy.  It's a sure sign that a place is on its last legs!

Title: Re: Thames Ditton Pub Crawl - Sept 11th

Maybe we should skip "The Gallery Restaurant" on the crawl then.

so "The Crown" is a pub in Thames Ditton I shall never go to...

If we want to keep the same number of pubs, we could go to the Red Lion - hasn't it just changed hands again?

I was in the Crown last Wednesday. Fantastic food and the owner (I assume the man who spoke to us is the owner) -  was lovely.

That said - its not really a drinking pub but to save on discussion I say we just stick with the plan Keith proposed which I have attached below.

There will be other pub crawls and we can include other pubs (like the Crown and the others we have discussed) in the next one!

Im looking forward to Saturday... just hope it does not rain!

I think from what i understand.. that many previous customers of the crown havent been back as it had a poor reputation so the new owner is trying to establish it as a new entity. It will still have the bar area but also focus on restaurant reputation etc

Final plans...

Ok - my partners family are definately coming to stay with us and they arrive at about 6 on the Saturday. This means two things for me ... one it rules out Caroline (though she is going to try and pop in to a few of the pubs), it also means I should really start at 6pm at the Albany as I may have to let them into the house (and the Albany is close).

Is this ok for everyone? i.e. a 6pm start rather than 5? I am happy to rejig if it does not work. Deborah - for example if you guys re-arranged your lesson just to fit in the 5pm start then I am happy to try and stick to it?

If this is ok - this is what I propose:

6pm - Albany (leave at 6:35 pm)
6:45pm - Swan (leave at 7:40 pm !allows an hour at the Swan ! )
7:45pm - Red Lion  (leave at 8:10pm)
8:20pm - Ferry (leave at 8:55 pm)
9pm - Angel (leave at 9:40 pm
9:45 / 10pm - George (stay til close and then on to Rose for anyone who fancies it... assuming they let us in).

This will also mean I can try and persuade Carolines family to join us in the Swan (they have children so as long as its not raining they will definately do this).

Attendee list so far (though it would be lovely to have a few more):

See you all at the Albany on Saturday at 6pm.

To make it easy to spot us (I know what Deborah, John and ryteman look like + the east moleseyians - so thats just Keith + Mrs E and Dittonian):

I'll be wearing a bright dark orange jumper and jeans + a cap! (just for the first pub and then I'll take the cap off...).

For people who want to join later - don't forget the schedule its:
6pm - Albany (leave at 6:35 pm)
6:45pm - Swan (leave at 7:40 pm !allows an hour at the Swan ! )
7:45pm - Red Lion  (leave at 8:10pm)

It was thoroughly enjoyable - helped in so small part by the lovely weather and of course the alcohol.

Thanks all that made it!

Although - we never found Dittonian... apologies I forgot to wear my bright orange cap (and carry a copy of TD) but I did wear the bright orange jumper (and pretty sure no one else in the Albany was wearing orange) so hopefully you would've spotted us?

We only managed 4 of the 6 pubs - as after the Red Lion we all decided to just go to the George and skip the Ferry and Angel.

But I think at least John, Deborah, Chris and I had the requisite number of drinks so its doable... just have to allow more time per pub!

I should add that there was much titillating village gossip as well as humour, wisdom and deeply perceptive comments on the State of The World; but these  must remain privy to those who turned out for the occasion!

Title: Re: Thames Ditton Pub Crawl - Sept 11th

....and 'the next pub crawl,' date to be arranged, would probably be:
Angel...Greyhound....Lamb & Star alias 'Ewe' and the Alma alias 'Marney's'

Another event you may want to bear in mind is the Ripieno Choir's pub crawl in December just before Christmas.  I'll post the date when fixed (probably around 19 Dec).  This local choir is very good, and crawls the pubs singing carols and collecting for good causes.  They are fun to follow.  Photos from the last TD choral pub crawl in 2008 are here: http://residents-association.com/news/ripieno/index.html

Title: Re: Thames Ditton Pub Crawl - Sept 11th
Post by: Juninho on September 22, 2010, 07:30:24 AM
Yes Keith - whens the next one?

You've already got the route down:
Angel...Greyhound....Lamb & Star alias 'Ewe' and the Alma alias 'Marney's'

So all you have to do is pick a day! And decide what colour we should all wear so new people will recognize us!

Or is the next one the Christmas carol one?  Actually I think its too early to be allowed to talk about christmas now...

After all - its only September and plenty of long sunshiney summer days to go yet (doubters - just take a look outside today!).

Title: Re: Thames Ditton Pub Crawl - Sept 11th

Well now,  how about Sunday lunchtime 10 October?  We could start at Alma (Marney's) 1100,  Lamb & Star (Ewe) 1200, Greyhound 1230 then at 1300 walk through the common and across the Green to the Angel for a spot o' lunch.  It seems to me that for the rural pastures and ponds of Weston Green a lunchtime outing would be a good idea.  Weather permitting.  But it depends on whether participants can make it.

Ah - as things stand I have to work on Sunday the 10th of October - so that may rule me out.

That said - personally weekends in October are a bit busy at the moment so -> maybe worth plowing ahead with that date and I'll see if I can make some of it at least!!

I like the idea of a day time crawl as well!

I'm happy to at least still try October 10th ... but will be on call so may have to bail.

Otherwise some dates that work for me are:
Sat Oct 30th
Novermber 21st...

Hmmm ... I rekcon you should go with the first instinct though which was October 10th assuming enough people can make it!

You are right.  Marneys, at least, opens at midday.  And so a Sunday itinerary would be:

preprandial at Lamb & Star (the Ewe) 1200
The Alma (Marneys) 1230 and lunch
postprandial to:
the Greyhound 1400
walk via Ditton Common to
the Angel 1500

How about a Halloween Autumnal Pub crawl on Sunday 31 October?  You have an extra hour as the clocks go back.  So make the most of it....sign in below....

So, at the moment it is just two couples: us and Deborah & partner.  The weather is predicted by the Met as dry with sunny intervals fwiw.  I suggest we meet at the Ewe at 12.00 and go on to lunch at Marney's.  If nobody else has joined by Marneys, we may or may not go on to the other two pubs so no guarantees for Greyhound / Angel.

Yes sadly got a late lunch on Sunday so not sure what time we'll be back. Guessing circa 6ish ?

I'll drop Deborah a bell as if you are all still out and drinking we will join for 1/2!

Sadly back too late to partake but how'd it go?

Got some news and apparantly you made it to at least 3 pubs?

Title: Re: Thames Ditton Pub Crawl
Post by: Keith on November 01, 2010, 02:12:02 PM
Had to skip Marneys as they were full with no tables for lunch - so we adjourned immediately to the Greyhound. at that point.

Shame not more people joined us but on the other hand the gossip was good!  Let's hope more show up for the choral pub crawl on 17 Dec.

Keith with all this snow I am guessing you are out and about taking some nice snow pictures! Looking forward to seeing some of the pictures you took last night!

So whens the next pub crawl then?

Also Keith - did you manage to put up photos from the choir ones? It would be lovely to see some (but appreciate all these things take time!).

Slightly off thread:
Jusst had a look at your 'gloomy' ones - some really good ones in there and my favourite is of the boat!

I did find it a little amusing that you couldn't pick a day when it was actually raining to get a picture of the car park and had to photoshop that in- considering how much rain we have had lately!!

Title: Re: Thames Ditton Pub Crawl
Post by: Keith on January 13, 2011, 04:19:14 PM
For the Ripieno ones, follow the home page link to recent Winter photos (21 December).

Gloom: It was a rainy day in fact when the carpark one was taken - with clear patches.    But there was quite a lot of photoshopping going on.  Rain is difficult to catch on camera unless it is the stair-rod variety.  The darkroom stage always was important...

Thanks - I had actually clicked on that link and didn't realise that there were multiple index pages (not the most internet savy me ...)

So proposals for the next pub crawl please?

I think we need a winter warmer one!! Any takers? We could pick a nice Friday night in Feb?

Perhaps doing pubs that serve up mulled wine, hot toddy, mulled cider, etc

Title: Re: Thames Ditton Pub Crawl
Post by: Juninho on January 14, 2011, 11:24:56 AM
Quick check of the calendar and I reckon Sunday Jan 30th (though I think it rules out the other half).

Proper winter warmer of a pub crawl!

Proposed route (stolen from Keiths proposals some months back):

Start at the Alma at 4:30
Short hop to the Greyhound at 5:15
Another short hop to the Ewe 5:45
Then nice long walk via Ditton Common to the Angel - 6:45
Then either up to the George at 7:30ish ?

Happy to make it earlier/later or even another Sat/Sunday.

Title: Re: Thames Ditton Pub Crawl
Post by: Juninho on January 17, 2011, 11:10:07 AM
Err no takers ?

Guess it'll just be me (billy no mates wondering the streets of Thames Ditton ever so slightly inebriated) !

Incidentally I think the Ewe comes before the greyhound so slight change of order:
Start at the Alma at 4:30
Short hop to the Ewe at 5:15
Another short hop to the Greyhound 5:45
Then nice long walk via Ditton Common to the Angel - 6:45
Then either up to the George at 7:30ish ?

Possible curry at the Rose for those left standing!

I'm a bit pushed till the end of March/early April (online tutoring - much of which takes place at weekends & other obligations).  Maybe when the Spring warms up, with nthose white fluffy clouds, daffs and the prospect of bambi in the bush....?

April is quite tricky because of all the b/h weekends.

Right - almost April so perhaps I should try and book in that pub crawl for May.

I've just picked a Sunday - thats not a b/h and plumped for Sunday the 22nd of May.

The pub crawl will most likely be the circuit at the bottom of this post.

Any tentative takers? Copy and paste the list below and add your name... (don't be shy now... first person to add themselves on the list gets a prize!)

Yep I agree. ( from a female point of view ).

Harmless fun I reckon. Really do not think that men need a poster to sow the seed of chatting up a woman etc etc. Sure a poster would really not make a huge amount of difference.

Men are men, woman are woman, and since the beginning of time, that has involved them ' getting together ' as it were!

Well for what its worth - all the attendees of the pub crawl will be impeccably behaved !

Speaking of the pub crawl - it would be nice to get a few more attendees so a gentle prod to encourage people to come along.

I won't try and come up with a witty line to tempt you in case that wittiness is misconstrued and I get into trouble... !

This is the current list (we've had one or two changes).

Slight bump again to encourage some more attendees!

Note: you don't have to do the whole pub crawl!! you're more than welcome to pop in for a single pint or two at any of the pubs!  We will try and stick to the schedule to make this easier on people but please do let me know if you plan to make any of the pubs and what time so that we try and be stricter on those!

I'm quite happy to hear the history of the pubs ! Otherwise I fear the conversation will focus on the parking consultation or foxes (we should've had this pub crawl when the squatters were in situ!).

Schedule:
-----
Start at the Alma at 13:30 (after lunch)
Short hop to the Greyhound at 14:30
Another short hop to the Ewe 15:15
Then nice long walk via Ditton Common to the Angel - 16:15
George at 17:15 (to catch the final premiership matches) - I envisage the George will be busy BUT we can always sit outside!

Put me +wife & baby down as potentials please.

We're popping over to the 'open garden' at Little Lodge at some stage during the day (http://www.ngs.org.uk/gardens/gardenfinder/garden.aspx?id=8168), but could either do this before the 'crawl' starts, or perhaps this could be included along the way (though I guess by the time you're walking from the Angel to the George, past Little Lodge, you'll all be plastered!)

Excellent idea re: the garden ! We saw the signs up for it when we went along to the cricket club (we also spotted your classic mercedes in the driveway and garage!!) but forgot until just now!

We could all pop in I think ? We'll only have had 4 pints so should be fine...!!

Then again  maybe before the crawl (in our own time) would be a better idea!

So 12:45 at the little lodge garden? And then on to Marnies?

There was I thinking that the garage was fairly secluded!  That said, both of them were parked out most of the day on Saturday, and the door was open virtually all weekend as I was unpacking the contents.......

Right! DON'T FORGET its the TD pub crawl this Sunday!

Still open to all (and you dont  have to do all the pubs- but please let us know if you are doing only one of the ones later so we know to keep an eye out).

Just to make it easy to 'recognise us' - I'll be wearing a bright orange 'hoody' (and I'll try and convince caroline to do the same) - and I will also carry (though will not wear !) a very very bright reflective orange cap which I will put on our table/bar/drinking area.

See you all at Marneys at 1:30 pm !

Start at Marneys/the Alma at 13:30 (after lunch)
Short hop to the Greyhound at 14:30

Good meeting you both (and anabel) too. Hope the roast was as tasty as it looked.

Yep -> that was us on the way to the George from the Angel. We did consider popping in to see the garden en route (as we passed that as well) but then decided to keep the momentum going.

For the George we were just down to 5 of us?

For the record - Caroline and I managed to make it to the Swan after the George. This to match the original pub crawl # of pubs quota (seeing as we skipped the Ewe). Though I have to confess that neither of us managed any alcohol there.

Next one in a few months time? Possibly to catch the start of Autumn?

RIGHT!

Time for the next pub crawl (the 3rd edition can you believe?) - but as some people seem to be put off by the idea of a pub crawl... what about just a meet up in a pub, followed by a small wander to maybe another pub?

And what about the weekend when the A/C cars from Belgium are in town? I believe its the 20th/21st of August !

So a much easier schedule then:

1. The Angel (as I believe cars maybe congregating on Giggs Hill Green?)
wander down to:
2. The George and Dragon

This is purely a suggestion and happy to modify this schedule/date/pubs/etc to suit.

First person to reply will carry the greatest weight, second secondmost and so on!!

And now, in the evening sun, the beautiful cars and the historic three-wheeler have all gone, leaving only a couple of people laying intransitively in the lengthening shadows, watching the cricket...

I'm really sorry that I failed to turn up.  Some of my petrolhead friends got wind of the AC show on the green, and invited themselves over.  I was hoping that I could do both, but it was not to be  :(

No problem at all - there are always some people who have to bail on  these type of things (hence why I always push to get the numbers up and will settle for less on the day!!).

We were very lucky with the sunshine and the mini pub crawl turned into 3 pubs in the end with some making it to the Swan as well!

Such lovely cars on the green !

Its a shame in some ways that they are no longer being made in Thames Ditton. Perhaps we should start a campaign to bring AC Cars back!!!

I know its still early (and I hate people mentioning the X word early in the year) - but evenings/weekends in late November / early December are getting busy and I wanted to put in a placeholder for the carol pub crawl (note I did not use the X word!!).

Is there a date planned for it?

As this was awesome last year and I definately want to go again this year!

Bumpity bump bump - no other takers? Was a brilliant night last year!!

Unfortunately its the Queens Road 'Albany' night tonight - so I have been unable to drag the few people I know from Queens Road along.#

But looking at the schedule we (Caroline and I) think we will only make the first three pubs (as its a bit too much of a trek to The Marquess of Granby).

So we are going to try and crash the Queens Road night @ the Albany after the Red Lion!!

Attendees for TD xmas carol pub crawl
------------------------------------------------
Juninho
Caroline
Michael
Kosta
John
Deborah

Itinerary:
7.30 pm: George and Dragon
8.00 pm: Ye Olde Swan
8.30 pm: The Red Lion
9.15 pm: The Marquess of Granby

Funnily enough the last time we went there was the last xmas choir pub crawl.

We liked it!

Its quite basic/bare inside (could do with a lick of paint and some new decor possibly) but it has a pool table and I am told the Thai food in there is decent. It was slightly unusual that the telly next to the sofa we were sitting on was switched on!!

The landlord seems to care about the quality of his beer - and they had some nice ales on tap (timothy taylor landlord being one of them).

It was quite empty for a Friday night  (the Swan was a lot busier when we moved onto there).

I only went in once, before I had just moved to td, to ask directions, the rudeness of the people I spoke to didnt implore me to go back. (and I spend all day long being shouted at by clients so I'm pretty thick skinned!)

Bringing the pub crawl posts back into the right thread...

I can't make the next pub crawl until my weight is down!  I've cancelled all but one lunches, even reunions, this year (except for one with very old friends - in both senses - in a London Club)
There's no way I could go on a pub crawl just drinking water.

I think its about time to start thinking of a Spring pub crawl.

I have noticed a few new posters on here and now I also have some other people like the NCT group to tap in to to bulk up the numbers!!

The last one (I am not counting the xmas carol one as we piggy backed on that) was our best turnout yet and in all close to 20 people (albeit not all at the same time)...

Though it was just the Albany and Swan so that was a pretty poor effort in terms of a 'crawl'.

Is there anything on the horizon we can tie in to? Otherwise I am happy to pick a random date out of thin air, circa mid march?

Ok thats decuded - lets do a pub crawl in Spring then.

I am going to make a real effort to get a good turn out ! (lots of twisting arms of people I meet! notice at the boat club and anything else I can think of).

But that said we will be in the Swan for sure if anyone fancies it ! A pub crawl that errr goes nowhere!

I'll speak to the OH to work out what time is best and post back on here!

Good seeing those that made it to the pub pit stop (as opposed to teh planned pub crawl!).

I will work on sorting something for spring! I just need to work out how to rope a good group together (I am thinking we need about 20 odd people to make it a proper crawl!).

We will keep it simple - two pubs only - Swan+ George

August 11th too soon? (err as my next free Sunday is not until mid Sept...)

HI Deborah - not had much interest but I am also trying to sort a kayak tour (followed by beers of course) on the day.

So how about from 3/4 pm at either the Albany or the boat club?
