Does anyone else think that the one-way down the high street is good news?

As a resident who lives close by, I think it has calmed traffic down and infact resolved the  painful problem of the jam at the George and dragon corner as the flow of traffic/decision making is reduced. I also suggest that it has a positive effect on computers cutting through the village.

I have an awful lot of problems with the speed of my computer - but I have not tried the High Street route!!!!

Have to say, I disagree.  If you live the other side of the one-way system, trying to get to Hampton Court means you have to either endure the gazillion speed bump route along Summer Road / Speer Road or Portsmouth Road, neither are good options and add time and distance to your journey. 

It's a bit of a pain to have to go down onto Portsmouth Rd and around via Giggs Hill to get to the library, school and surgery. That said, the return journey is much easier because of the improved flow around the George.

It also makes walking out on to the road to let people pass on the very narrow pavements of the High Street safer/viable.

However, I understand that the shops may be suffering?

Took me longer to get to the docs, I never see traffic in the village as a major problem tbh though.

We do seem to have some of the worst drivers I encounter anywhere though,albeit they might be passing through and not residents

Ratty - the improved flow is the essential point.

In terms of the shops, they have been given a gift already with their 1hour parking, the one way flow will appease the residents hopefully. The shops like the gifts shops are destination shops anyhow, hence no would visit them everyday, l don't think passing traffic is a relevant argrument for them.

Maybe in years to come wider pavements can be created.

Sorry Craig, l do not see your comment but jumping on a bike or walking to the library/doctors is possible. Conversely, having lived on the way one road up to Richmond terrace for years, it's hardly difficult to think about your day ahead and plan accordingly. For instance, l used to goto waitrose on my home and to the doctors on Richmond hill in the morning if necessary.

I agree drivers are like tigers here and very disrespectful hence some need to be caged, especially where pedestrian s are involved - there needs to be something done at the George, one way works.

I generally always walk where possible but if going on to work from varying places or taking children then practically the car always wins

Craig, so do I but not getting run over and improving air quality, makes the walk more enjoyable,/peaceful, rather than dangerous/noisy.   

Portsmouth Road and Hampton Court Way are the fast roads here, if the High street goes one way, I think it would make sense to make the railway crossing having the option to turn both ways, and this would satisfy Peter and me too, because I like the parks.

Anyway, there is a contact detail for the high street alterations, perhaps someone or some people some table these ideas to them.

The problem with traffic flow changes, as with parking restriction changes, is that only looking at a small part runs the risk of just pushing the problem elsewhere. The 'no right turn' at the rail crossing was introduced to reduce the 'rat-run' down Summer Road from the Portsmouth Road to the Hampton Court Way and it did that quite successfully, so I would be reluctant to see that change back again.

Overall, I don't know what the knock-on effects of a one-way High Street would be elsewhere in the village traffic flow, so would need more information on likely consequences before passing an opinion on it.

The no right turn was to reduce the number of major accidents at the crossroads, there have been some tragic incidents on Hampton Court Way over the years.

Sadly loads of people now perform illegal and stupid manouvers such as 'u' turns and right turns where they shouldn't.  I have even witnessed these happening in front of police but they do nothing!

I quite like the one way through the village but I probably wouldn't if I lived in or near Ashley Road.

The idea of two way at traffic lights was only suggesting there are always options which can be given but l agree that one could be dangerous.

The high street option is for safety reasons only, it's not wide enough for two cars clearly......

I presume if you live in Ashley Road, you could walk to the station or park in Speer road if going to Hampton Court
