Periodically we get a greater spotted one (about blackbird-sized) on our old apple tree, after the insects in which the tree, alas, abounds (that tree is a veritable textbook of apple tree diseases and insect attack! But it still manages a crop.)

I often hear one in the trees behind 74-128 Speer Road. I even managed to get a photo of it in the back garden last October. It's a green woodpecker and it spent a good few minutes sitting on my fence post!

Saw a green woodpecker in the cemetery recently (a live one, perched on a tombstone!)

Its a Great spotted Woodpecker.
I tend to hear it at the back of Thames Ditton Juniors, and along the common by the Portsmouth Road.
A great place to hear them is Telegraph Hill, especially first thing. They are difficult to spot high up, and normally only see them as they fly off.

I have been a resident of TD for over 10 years, and always hear the Woodpecker at this time of year. Has anyone seen it, or know what it is?
